Binaural Beats are not exactly music, the are beats specially created to be interpreted by the brain. Some theories confirm the these sound can help to relief pains, improve creativity and inspiration, to get better rest, induce MEDITATION and contemplation, improve the body energy and more. Some Binaural Beats uses are:
But how can be mixed Binaural beats and Zen? In the modern world the binaural beats are used as you laid down, and you just hear the sound, waiting for a miracle to happen. Maybe you want to get rid off the daily stress but it does not work as you want and even worst you can get a terrible headache, at this point the Zen discipline comes to the practice.
Zen discipline is not a "for the moment relief" Zen discipline looks for a long term healing, relaxation, inspiration etc. Then now ahead each time you decide to use the binaural beat of your preference you have to think about your own being, and try to empty you brain for each think that is bothering you at this moment. The zen discipline ask to empty your brain but this is not easy at least for many people then if you like rain or water sound , you have to hear and feel the water running over your head, or if you like wind you will feel the wind hitting your face, other people like the bubbles sound and you can feel, not just imagine, you are in a place full of bubbles!.
In my experience it does not matter if each sound has been design for and specific use, I like about 4 or 5 sounds and those sounds help me to sleep, to get inspiration at work, to meditate,.... The clue is to find sounds that you really like, the sound that gives you some kind of satisfaction or good sensation, good feeling, good memories. If you can find the "good" sound you can go deep into you own being and get rid of the bad sensation, memories, stress, pain. At this moment you are in the process of empty your brain; your brain just remember the nice feelings related with the sound and even better your brain stars to heals itself.
Next you can see some phrases that can help you to think or meditate you just need to choose a topic of your self behabior and analize it. Don't choose "the world peace" take for example "why I get headache?" maybe you have headache! then take you favorite sound and look for the "calm mind inside you"!.
Zen Phrases By Joseph Caulfield: "There are two beautifully descriptive phrases which appear again and again in Zen literature: Mizu no kokoro and Tsuki no kokoro. Mizu no kokoro is often translated as "mind like water." This is a lovely phrase which is too inexact to be very helpful, standing alone. What is meant by this is to make the mind calm when facing an emergency or an adversary. The calm mind, like still water, accurately reflects all that comes before it. It is otherwise referred to as fudoshin or "immovable mind." Tsuki no kokoro is usually translated as a mind like the moon. This refers to the necessity of maintaining surveillance over one's surroundings at all times. As the bright illumination produced by the unclouded full moon as it reflects its light earthward, so the mind must be aware of all conditions surrounding it. This is often described as zanshin or kan-ken futatsu no koto, or “perceiving with both the eyes and the intuitive mind."
